History

A growing Catholic population in the Cheat Lake area convinced  Bishop Joseph H. Hodges of the necessity to establish a mission in 1978. Dedicated to St. Luke the Evangelist, the community was designated a mission of St. Theresa Parish, Morgantown, in 1980. The community worshipped at Cheat Lake Methodist Church for the first eight months until a church was built. In 1983 St. Luke was designated an independent parish and placed under the care of the Marist Fathers. Five years later, Bishop Francis Schulte elevated the mission to parish status with Rev. Frederick Annie as pastor. Expansion followed, including the addition of Theophilus Hall in 1990 and a new rectory and Education Center in 1995. A remodeling of the worship space was completed in 1997.
